Sarah Schuhl

Sarah Schuhl is an educational coach and consultant specializing in mathematics, professional learning communities (PLCs), common formative and summative assessments, priority school improvement, and response to intervention (RTI). She has worked in Oregon and California schools as a secondary mathematics teacher, high school instructional coach, and K–12 mathematics specialist.

Sarah was instrumental in the creation of a PLC in the Centennial School District in Oregon, helping teachers make large gains in student achievement. She earned the Centennial School District Triple C Award in 2012.

Schuhl designs meaningful short- and long-term professional development and embedded coaching in districts throughout the United States. Her work focuses on strengthening the teaching and learning of mathematics, having teachers learn from one another when working effectively as collaborative teams in a PLC, and striving to ensure the learning of each student through assessment practices and intervention. Her practical approach includes working with teachers and administrators to implement assessments for learning, analyze data, collectively respond to student learning, and map standards.

From 2010 to 2013, and again from 2016 - 2019 Sarah served as a member and chair of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Editorial Panel for the journal Mathematics Teacher and from 2019 - 2022 served as secretary for the mathematics leadership organization NCSM. She is also a contributing author to a middle school basal curriculum and a coauthor on intervention mathematics materials for grades 3–5.

Priority Schools and RTI:

-Acceleration for ALL and School Improvement for ALL: A How-to-Guide for doing the right work. These books provide ready-to-use tools and protocols for administrators and teachers working collaboratively to ensure the learning of every student.

-Taking Action, 2nd edition. This book details how to establish a systematics RTI (or MTSS) system in a school utilizing a guiding coalition, collaborative teams, and an intervention team.
