Michael Helquist is an award-winning journalist, historian, and activist. His biography of Marie Equi was named a 2016 Stonewall Honor Book by the American Library Association. it also received the 2016 Gold Award for Nonfiction/LGBT by IndieFab. Helquist is the winner of the 2016 Joel Palmer Award for best nonfiction writing in the previous year by the Oregon Historical Quarterly. As a journalist, Helquist's coverage of the AIDS epidemic was among the first in the nation. He later directed a global AIDS communication program. His writing has appeared in Ms. Magazine, American Medical News, and The Advocate among others. He lives in San Francisco.
