Kevin Hackett

Kevin J. Hackett, Ph.D. is Senior National Program Leader for the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, where he is leading the effort to save the honeybees and combat invasive species. He holds B.S. (1969) and M.S. (1971) degrees in Entomology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. (1980) in Insect Pathology from The University of California - Berkeley. Previously he worked as the Eastern Coordinator of The John Muir Institute for Environmental Studies, coined the term "ecologism," and founded a student group at UC-Berkeley that became the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers including several in the journal Science and is the recipient of major national and international awards in science. He received the Rutgers University Graduate School Distinguished Alumnus Lifetime Achievement Award (2013) and has been nominated for a United States Presidential Rank Award. He authored three science fiction novels, Sen Secluded, Sen DiaSoul, and Sen Free, and a memoir, Yardville, Nothing Ever Happens There. He also enjoys turning the stories he once made up for his children into written stories for other children to enjoy. He lives in Maryland and enjoys collaborating with his wife, Kathy, on BYTES Power Smarts.
