Born in Ilford in 1959, Milton Johanides made his name writing about his Greek Cypriot heritage. He created the Papayiannis family who are the main protagoinists of The Cypriot Trilogy, Johanides uses the family and in particular Artie Papayiannis as a vehicle for a modern fable, which is at the same time humorous, satirical and romantic. The Cypriots Trilogy consists of The Funked Up Artist, set in the 1920s, Olympia's Dream, set during WW2, and The Songs We Sang At Trollopes which is set in a Briths public school and University in the 70s.
