Marco Anelli

After specializing in darkroom photography in Paris, Marco Anelli (b. Rome, 1968) began working on photographic projects that evolve over time. His themes and subjects, each documented in a publication, include sculpture and architecture (L’Ombra e La Luce, Silvana 1999; All’Ombra del Duomo, Contrasto 2010), sport (Il Calcio, Motta 2002; Pallacorda, Skira 2004) and classical music (The Gestures of the Spirit, Peliti 2011). In 2010 he embarked on a personal project during Marina Abramovic’s The Artist is Present at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, taking portraits of the 1,545 participants who took part in the performance (Portraits in the presence of Marina Abramović, Damiani 2010). In 2015 he completed A Simple Story, his project on the construction of the new Whitney Museum of American Art; in 2017 he released Building Magazzino on the construction of Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring, NY.

In Artist Studios New York (Damiani 2020) he explores the character of the artist and their work as expressed in their studio leading the viewer into the creative space of worldwide famous artists.

TINO, Nivola in America is his last published work (by Silvana Editoriale and Magazzino Italian Art 2021) with which Anelli brings renewed knowledge and attention to Costantino Nivola’s sculptures scattered throughout New York City and the US, providing a deeper insight into the work of the Italian artist.

Since 2018 Anelli has been working on First American Portrait, a series of portraits capturing new American citizens directly after their participation in the United States Oath Ceremony.

He lives and works in New York City.
