Hal Barwood is a veteran writer with multiple credits in multiple media.
Hal studied art and animation in college, but the late nineteen sixties when he graduated were a historic low point in the production of animated movies, so Hal turned to dramatic writing and then spent twenty years as a Hollywood screenwriter. Among the films with his name on them are THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, DRAGONSLAYER, and WARNING SIGN.
When computers shrank onto home desktops, Hal veered into video games, and for more than twenty years he designed and wrote a number of them, including INDIANA JONES and the FATE OF ATLANTIS, INDIANA JONES and the INFERNAL MACHINE, YODA STORIES, RTX RED ROCK, many others.
After all those years in the collaborative arts, he discovered the solitary pleasures of writing for the page.
His first three novels, SHADOWCOP, BROOMHANDLE, and WHISKEYJACK follow the adventures of an unusual young policewoman. She's a good cop with special abilities that help in her work. She is, in short, an adept. Some might call her a witch.
Another series — GLITTERBUSH, SANDPEOPLE, and TINWOMAN — focuses on the discovery of strange metallic plants whose seeds blew in from another world and spawned a collection of dangerous mechanical beings.
Hal has also written four standalone novels filled with vivid characters in difficult situations, but without supernatural overtones:
HAPPENSTANCE recounts a high stakes gambler’s efforts to foil attempts to steal an election in Reno, Nevada.
FULFILLMENT chronicles a newcomer’s trial by fire in the crazy business of video game development.
CRATERTOWN is the tale of settlers on Mars a hundred years from now and the agent from Earth who upends their fragile society when he cracks a murder case.
SHORTSELLERS takes on the violent consequences of financial shenanigans in San Francisco and the adventures of a dedicated amateur who demands justice.
