I started writing in the 1960's, while working as a roustabout on a sheep and cattle station in the back-blocks of North Island, New Zealand.
In the years that followed, both in New Zealand and back in the UK, I worked at all sorts of jobs, and in all sorts of places. My last job, before becoming a full-time writer, was as the Head of English in a Lincolnshire, Secondary School.
I have also written poetry, plays and film scripts. For the last twenty years I have lived in Hackney, in the East End of London.
One of the many things that interest me is the humour inherent in the difference between a person's public persona and their private life, and all of my more comic novels explore these inconsistencies in one way of another.
