In the '60s, I grew up next to the biggest illegal drag strip in the world; Woodward Avenue in Detroit. It was like 'American Graffiti' times a thousand. Dozens of cool drive-in restaurants lined miles of eight lane Woodward. On Friday and Saturday nights, all the teens were out in their hot rods, new models and old ones, cruising the drive-ins with roller-skating waitresses and drag racing between the stop lights.
In the '70s it ended, but in 1994 a group held a 'cruise' on Woodward to raise non-profit funds. They hoped 25,000 people would come. 250000 showed up for the first 'Woodward Dream Cruise' and today it's the world's biggest classic car event with 1.3 million spectators watching over 40,000 classic cars and hot rods from all over the world.
I originally trained in theater, then graduated in cinematography. For many years afterward worked at TV stations and ad agencies writing, directing, producing TV commercials (well over 1,000 made so far). But my big dream was writing screenplays. I wrote, 'Dream Machines' as a screenplay and an LA producer optioned it, but couldn't get financing. So I'm going to try and raise the money to turn my novel into a movie. So far, so good.
