Leonid Machlis

Born in Moscow in 1945, now residing in Munich, Germany.

Philologist (MA in Russian Literature and Language, Moscow State University, 1964-1970), journalist, translator, long-time (1973-1995) program director, editor, author and moderator at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (USA), the Russian Service. This work was noted in a personal letter of appreciation from the President of the USA, Bill Clinton “on behalf of a grateful nation.”

Active journalist as of 1963. Author of hundreds of publications in the USSR/Russia, Israel, USA, Germany. Main themes of publications and radio programs: analysis of political events in the former USSR and Eastern Europe; human rights; Jewish history and culture; the Holocaust and overcoming of historical distrust between Jews and Germans; cultural life in the former USSR; relations between nations; problems of international security, etc.

In the 2000s edited the journals “Athena Papers” and “Connections” (NATO, “Partnership for Peace” Consortium of Defense Academies and Security Studies Institutes) and other publications on the problems of international security.
