Frazier Douglass was born and raised in Birmingham Alabama and began tent camping before graduating from high school. After earning his BA and MA in psychology from Auburn University, he moved to Wisconsin and began teaching in a small junior college. Over the next nine years, he and his family took dozens of family tent camping trips to federal, state and county parks located around the state and in neighboring states. In 1979, he returned to Alabama but continued to take five to ten tent camping trips every year. Most of these trips were to Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, but the primary trip each year for the past thirty-five years has been to Wisconsin with overnight stops in Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. Over his lifetime, he has camped in over 200 different public campgrounds located in 20 different states.
In 2007, he realized that current camping books and articles failed to include many important topics that could help readers plan and execute safer and more comfortable tent camping trips. Furthermore, he realized that many of these books also repeated dozens of common misconceptions and questionable tips. Accordingly, he began writing books that included important information that could not be found in any other camping book. These books are designed to help readers plan and execute safe and comfortable vacation trips to developed public campgrounds throughout the country.
