Julian Slatcher

Raised in a farming family in Northamptonshire, England, Julian Slatcher had a varied career before settling in biomedical science. Widowed by cancer at 33, he recently remarried in the Channel Islands, where he worked for several months through the summer of 2012

He has been writing since childhood, in both fiction and non-fiction.

He has been fascinated by wildlife for as long as he can remember, including wild flowers, which he has written about extensively. His reading included crime and thrillers from an early age but his first writing success came with non-fiction and his book Gardening With Wild Plants, about the use of wildflowers in a conventional garden context.

It is amazing how many native species are routinely used in our gardens and how many more could be.

With diverse interests that include ancient history and the continuing development and expansion of our knowledge of it, it was perhaps inevitable that his writing would encompass elements of that.

His novels They Wait in Silence and The Sweat of the Sun prememted the revelation that the Amazon rain forest was indeed populated by huge numbers of people with their own distinct culture and civilisation until very soon after the arrival in South America of the Spanish and Portugese. It is also now known that the Inca traded with these rain-forest people, though these facts were denied for centuries by conventional 'wisdom'.
