Hi, my name is Mary Hammond. I am a California woman who was diagnosed with mercury poisoning after I ate more high quality seafood than was good for me. The warnings had been there all along, but I had discounted them. Most of us do. The most interesting thing which I have discovered about this widespread disregard of the very real danger of mercury poisoning is that it has also affected our understanding of the past. Mercury and Social Anxiety is the first book I wrote about mercury poisoning, and in it I present social anxiety as a result of excessive fish in the diet as a modern day mad hatter's disease. In The Mad Hatter, I present Lewis Carroll's mad hatter as a self-portrait of the author's deteriorating mental state due to his own excessive exposure to mercury. My latest book is Mad Artist's Disease, and in it I explore the overlooked influence of mercury on the lives of the great artists.
