There I stood, in front of a crowd, not sure what to say—not sure I wanted to say anything. I was alone. Well, not technically alone. There were three people in the room and they all knew me. There was no one from outside that wanted to come into the conversation and I was not sure that I really wanted them to if they had decided to come late. Still, I sold a single copy of the book that I was there to promote. It was some progress. I was moving in one direction or another.

I am not sure how to really address a crowd when it comes down to me and the people who know me best. I have had had more success now that I have done more author related things. It is hard to pretend that it is not hard when no one else is showing up but the author.

I knew that when I was the only one showing up that I was in needing of changing something, so this is what I did: I changed.

Over the years of writing I have changed styles, and techniques for how to handle those techniques. I know that they tell you if you are doing something wrong to just put it down and quit doing it, that is not the right way to do anything. If you don’t know how to do something, take the time to come along and learn the right way. What did I do differently? I posted flyers and talked to the different people involved in everything. The technique was actually writing myself into existence. It is just like anyone else, you have to work hard to be noticed.

Several years ago I worked for a company that packaged novelty items to send to places like gas stations. Things like air fresheners and other things. I worked really hard that I was promoted to the position of a fork-truck operator ahead of the woman who trained me who’d been there months before I had come along. It didn’t take long before she stepped up to the plate and decided to quit. What did the company do? They just found a replacement. She was not willing to put up with the company not appreciating her. It is hard, even when you are talking to someone after every shift and saying, it was nice working with you today, and wondering if they were going to be there the following night. Should the company have promoted her over me? Well—that is an answer that only time could have answered.

So am I good when I am working properly? Yes.

Have you ever been asked the question “what is one weakness you have?,” at a job interview and wondered what in the world things would do if you told them the truth or told them a lie? Well, to be honest, I did better when I was not lying to these different companies. I had to tell you that things happen as we make ourselves more available and more vulnerable with the passing of each and every day.

So if you are wondering if you should pick-up one of my books (I do have my favorites so ask.) I recommend doing it. I work hard. I have always been a hard worker, but while I have been out and about which book I like most—I actually love them all. They are all just a little different. So that is a little about me, from here just imagine where to go. Everyone has an imagination it is what we do with it that plays a roll. So take your time and look over my books, and I think you’ll find yourself scratching your head, too.
