I HAVE LEARNED

I learned you don't have to have bruises to have been abused.

I was taught I had to understand that it's my responsibility to keep others happy and safe by giving them things they want to have from me. I had to keep myself safe by pretending, lying, being good in sports, and keeping the secrets. I have since learned this wasn't my job, but it was a smart thing to do, because I was only a kid.

I learned these were smart things I did as a kid, in order to survive, but as I started going through ups and downs on the journey to becoming an adult, I found I was lost to myself, and maybe never had even been there.

I learned it was time to go on a journey to "discover me." Sometimes I'd think I'd found it after four or five drinks or two or three pills, but it got lost in that same old embarrassment, shame and blame the morning after.

What I learned was that I had to put away, for good, many of the things I used as a child to survive.

I learned our minds are powerful creators. I became very good at creating illness, and it became too dangerous to continue, so I had to put it away.

I was given less than 1 % chance of living. The doctors hadn't known I had ovarian cancer. I've been cancer free for 42 years.

I know that it's important to say "Yes" to what you want to see in your life, even if it's way beyond your safe boundaries, and it scares you and doesn't feel good. That's the process of you starting to get to your truth, and in the end, it will set you free.

"Yes" to finally lighting my own windows, with words on the pages, so you can peer into my life, and if you get goose bumps or an "Aha" moment, you'll recognize parts of it might be true for you, too. You'll know you're not alone, and you can survive and prosper beyond what you ever can imagine. You can accomplish dreams you have not yet dared to dream. Know that I'm here for you, I love you, and that at any age you can create a brilliant life, and light up your own windows for someone else.
