Tania Marshall is an International award winning author, researcher and consultant clinical psychotherapist and forensic consultant. She was one of the first psychologists in the world to detail the Autistic female profile. She wrote about this on her now famous 2013 blog at https://taniaannmarshall.wordpress.com/2013/03/26/moving-towards-a-female-profile-the-unique-characteristics-abilities-and-talents-of-asperwomen-adult-women-with-asperger-syndrome/
She has worked in the areas of child development, child psychology, Autism, Asperger Syndrome, ADHD and related developmental conditions for 30 years, in a variety of roles. She has worked in private school, hospital and private practice settings. Tania holds a Master of Science in Applied Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She can be reached at aspiengirl@gmail.com
Tania works in private practice with individuals who have/are Asperger syndrome, autism, highly sensitive, gifted, twice-exceptional (2e), anxiety, OCD, depression and/or learning differences.
Tania has worked with hundreds of females who have been misdiagnosed, are 'self-diagnosed' or had some of the defining characteristics of Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning Autism, but not enough for a formal diagnosis. Many of these individuals have a stunning array of gifts and talents, in addition to challenges. This particular group of individuals tend to have some the characteristic traits of Asperger Syndrome or High Functioning Autism, but often present differently, confusing professionals. The field of female Autism is a very new area of research, and as such, very little is known.
In private practice, Tania was seeing more and more females being referred to her, who presented with a number of diagnoses, who had not been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Condition, yet had some features of Autism. This peaked her interest as she found it a fascinating area of research. This interest combined with the lack of knowledge, resources and awareness of females was the reason Tania decided to create the AspienGirl® Project, consisting of education, awareness, advocacy and philanthropy.
Tania wrote her first book, in a series, on female Autism, in 2014, entitled, "I Am AspienGirl®: The Unique Characteristics, Traits and Gifts of Females on the Autism Spectrum" to provide awareness of the female profile. The Foreward was written by world expert Dr. Judith Gould, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Director of the NAS Lorna Wing Centre for Autism, UK. Testimonials have been provided also by world experts Dr. Temple Grandin and Dr. Shana Nichols. This amazing group of females are trailblazers in their own right and Tania is most grateful to have their support.
Tania wrote the sequel to I Am AspienGirl®, entitled, "I Am AspienWoman: The Unique Characteristics, Traits and Gifts of Adult Females on the Autism Spectrum", in 2015. She is writing further instalments in the series.
Tania interviewed the amazing Dr. Uta Frith about Autism and female Autism in 2013, and this can be found at Tania's Wordpress blog site at http://taniaannmarshall.wordpress.com/2013/06/27/professional-interview-series-professor-uta-frith/
Tania created the AspienGirl® and AspienWoman Mentor Interview Series, devoted to interviewing females from a variety of countries about their diagnosis, their talents and their challenges. These interviews are being uploaded on a regular basis.
Tania's blog is a combination of interviews and writings specific to female Autism and Asperger Syndrome.
The AspienGirl® and AspienWoman Mentor Project and Interview Series was created due to the lack of information about successful females on the Spectrum and their innate strengths.
Tania created the AspienGirl® Project to address several issues:
Awareness: Females do have Autism or Aspergers, are often misdiagnosed and receiving inappropriate interventions.
Advocacy: Females are marginalized members of society. AspienGirls form a minority sub-culture within a larger marginalized group of females, and as such, have unique needs and challenges.
Education: There is little knowledge of Aspiengirls around the world, and as such, the AspienGirl® book series, contributes to the evolving and growing literature and knowledge base. An important step is to make available resources about the female profile across the lifespan, gender differences, interventions and support for females, in as many languages and countries as possible.
Philanthropy: Often AspienGirls seeking a diagnosis are often not able to afford the cost. The AspienGirl® Project will donate a percentage of book sales to cover the costs of diagnoses for those that cannot afford it.
Tania can be reached at aspiengirl@gmail.com for diagnostic assessment, consultations, therapy, coaching, workshops and/or trainings.
