I have just completed my first book, a creative non-fiction biography of the English writer, Laurie Lee. The book retraces his journey across a Spain in 1935 on the edge of civil war that was the subject of his classic book As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning.
My book takes a fresh look at Lee, examines the life changing impact that Spain had on his life and compares Spain then and now, at a time when it is facing its biggest crisis since the civil war.
The publication of the book coincides with the Laurie Lee Centenary Year in 2014.
I am now working on a second book about Spain.
The book was started as part of my MA Professional Writing at University College Falmouth and I was awarded a distinction for my work on it.
I have received plaudits for the early drafts of the book from established writers and editors:
"Paul Murphy's book is a wonderfully readable narrative and a highly original approach to the 'footsteps' genre. It works beautifully...."
Valerie Grove
Author: Laurie Lee- The Well-Loved Stranger
"Paul Murphy has a long and deep personal connection with Spain which gives his reflections a good deal of authority.
His writing style is sensitive and full of pleasing images and
unlike many such books, he 'inhabits" his subject."
Philip Marsden
Author of: The Bronski House; The Levelling Sea
"This concept is captivating and inspirational, and the high-quality presentation and lyrical writing style does it much justice."
