The author’s educational and work career

A University of Michigan undergraduate (1952), Harvard’s China Area Program (MA 1955) and Columbia University PhD in sociology (1962), Robert Mitchell was director of two survey research centers and a member of three others; executive director of two long-term task forces for the Florida governor and legislature; US member on a UN special committee on planning for urban areas; research, teaching and administration at Columbia, UC-Berkeley, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Florida State University - - all before becoming a Foreign Service Officer in the United States Agency for International Development with long-term postings in Egypt, Yemen and Guinea-Bissau. A prolific author both before and after retiring at age 65 from the Foreign Service in 1995. He brings quantitative, multi-disciplinary and international development perspectives on value-laden economic, political and social challenges historically and today in America and elsewhere. Currently lives in Brookline, Massachusetts from which he participates as a member and study-group leader in the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement.
