Ory Bartal

Dr. Ory Bartal is a Japanologist focusing on contemporary Japanese visual culture and design. Bartal completed his M.B.A. in the Department of International Business Administration (specializing in inter-cultural communications) at the Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo. He then perused advanced studies toward M. Des. in the Industrial Design Department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. He completed his Ph.D. at the School of Cultural Studies at the University of Tel Aviv, specializing in contemporary visual culture.

His researches deals with contemporary Japanese visual culture including advertising and contemporary design issues, Japanese avant-garde fashion, industrial design, manga, and visual communication in Japan. His research deals with the connection between aesthetics and contemporary consumer culture.

Bartal is currently the head of the Department of History and Theory in Bezalel – Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem.
