Mike Blackbird, an Idaho native, and 1960 Kellogg Senior High graduate, attended University of California, Long Beach after a four year hitch in the Navy. He graduated with a degree in history and political science. He retired in 2009 as regional sales manager for Cardinal Health in Seattle, Washington. He served three terms in the Idaho State Senate, 1986-1992. Mike married Florence Harrison in 1964. They recently celebrated their fifty-second wedding anniversary in August. They reside in Post Falls, Idaho. They have two adult children and one grandchild.
Mike's book, "One Flaming Hour" is a memoir of his bother Jerry, also a Kellogg Senior High, as well as a University of Idaho graduate. He was a decorated Vietnam War veteran, patriot and politician. Jerry experienced five years of what today would be characterized as Post Traumatic Syndrome before rebuilding his life committed to public service. He died in a helicopter crash in 1979 after serving his first session in the Idaho State Senate. As a freshman legislator he passed a major piece of legislation. He was considered a rising star in Idaho politics.
Overcoming the adversity he experienced in Vietnam is perhaps more instructive, and even a greater tribute to his life, than the promise of his political future.
