Peter Meyer

Peter Meyer is a naturalist with an insatiable curiosity about the coastal environment. His keen interest in his surroundings motivates him to explore, investigate, and learn everything he can about the plants, animals and ecosystems of the coast.

Meyer has a strong academic background. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in zoology from Miami (Ohio) University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Meyer subsequently received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Ohio State University, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (another academic honorary).

Dr. Meyer practiced medicine for thirty years in Wilmington, North Carolina. He is board-certified in emergency medicine, and maintains a special interest in hazardous marine animals. In 2011, Dr. Meyer retired from medicine. Since then, Peter and his wife, Cathy, have been Coastwalkers, hiking the beaches of the Carolinas and beyond.

Aside from medicine, Peter enjoys running, biking, soccer, reading, fishing, drawing, photography, scuba diving, preparing and eating seafood, and, last but not least, writing. Through writing, Peter hopes to foster respect and concern for the environment, especially among younger readers.

In addition to five printed books, Peter is co-author of the eBook, Coastwalk North Carolina, a four-section publication that chronicles Peter and Cathy’s hike of North Carolina’s barrier island beaches. The trek started at the South Carolina border and finished at the Virginia border, traversing 425 miles and 21 barrier islands.
