I love finding out about how sound works and how humans respond to it. This is what led me to write A Symphony of Sound: The Science Behind What We Hear for children and two popular science books for adults. In Symphony I delve into the captivating origins of sound with a visual feast from Sophie Escavy Lim; in Sonic Wonderland I investigate the most amazing sounds in the world, and in Now You’re Talking I explore the human voice. For my day job (Professor of Acoustical Engineering, University of Salford, UK) I get involved manipulating sounds, whether that is designing a room so music sounds more beautiful, or coming up with new ways to improve hearing aids. I have presented numerous science documentaries on BBC Radio and won an ASA science writing award. I currently hold the Guinness World record for producing the Longest Echo in one of the Inchindown Oil Tanks - you can read about that in the first chapter of Sonic Wonderland.
