At the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Dawn was part of the campus Greens and earned undergraduate degrees in Environmental Studies, Education, and German Literature. She later earned her Master’s degree in Environmental Education from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. She has worked as a high school teacher, at a nonprofit helping schools develop nature areas, as an environmental education coordinator, and as an environmental education consultant. Most recently, she founded an environmental education nonprofit, We All Need Food and Water.

An award-winning author, Dawn has authored seven environment-related books.
