Dr. William H Smallman

Dr. Bill Smallman began work as an aerospace design engineer after graduating from John Brown University and marrying Doris Klett whom he met in college. After seminary they joined Baptist Mid-Missions in 1968. Now with a son and daughter, they served in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, all through the 1970s, teaching in the Baptist Seminary of the Amazon and planting a church in Manaus. Bill initiated the process of nationalizing that seminary which continues under Brazilian leadership. During their furloughs in the Chicago area Bill completed his M.A. in Communications – Intercultural Ministries at Wheaton Graduate School in 1980.

Once Bill was invited to the administration of Baptist Mid-Missions, the family moved near Cleveland, Ohio, where they still live. Bill completed the Doctor of Missiology degree (D.Miss.) at Trinity International University (TEDS) in 1985. He completed his time in the BMM office as a Vice-President and Director of Global Training, and retired at the end of 2009. Doris graduated Home in 2019. Bill was also adjunct professor of Missiology at several Baptist colleges and seminaries. He has ministered in 27 nations around the world. For many years he taught Cross-Cultural Communications in colleges and for interns in Baptists for Israel Institute.

His books deal with missionary service, theological education, and Bible study, including a series of resources for teachers of adult or teen Bible classes on Bible books or theological topics of interest. His books include Missiologia, a textbook in Portuguese, published in Brazil in 2022
