Tom Murphy was born and grew up in Philadelphia. He graduated from the U.S. Army language School in 1963 and had diplomas from the Institute for East European Studies at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland and the Alliance Francaise in Paris. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from La Salle College in Philadelphia and in 1967 joined the Central Intelligence Agency. He served in Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Africa and Latin America. Murphy was fluent in Spanish, French, Russian, Portuguese and Hungarian. He was promoted to the Senior Intelligence Service in 1988. He was awarded the Career Intelligence Medal and the Intelligence Medal of Merit. He retired in 1992 and now lives with his wife in Florida, where he plays golf badly.
