Howard Chiang

Howard Chiang is Lai Ho & Wu Cho-liu Endowed Chair in Taiwan Studies, Professor of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies, and Director of the Center for Taiwan Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. He was born in Tainan, Taiwan; grew up in Vancouver, Canada; and received his Ph.D. in history from Princeton University. Between 2019 and 2022, he served as the Founding Chair of the Society of Sinophone Studies. His research focuses on the history and cultural studies of science, medicine, race, gender, and sexuality in modern China and the Sinophone Pacific.
