Barbara Hurwitz

When Barbara Schilling Hurwitz first began teaching 7th and 8th graders, her goal was to help students develop a love of literature. On reading days students brought their books and pillows to the classroom and Ms. Hurwitz provided tea and cookies—the perfect setting to curl up with a good book. Students read, shared their thoughts and feelings with her through journal writing and introduced their favorite books to their fellow students. Her program not only built passionate readers, but also opened students minds to cultural differences, opportunities and adversities.

Later she became focused on building students' executive functioning skills—organization, time management, study techniques—and opened here own academic coaching business, Skills & Strategies.

Ms. Hurwitz has published her first Young Adult adventure novel, PANDU and 2 workbooks, The Essential Guide to NYC High School Admissions and The Essential Guide to High School Admissions for the DC Metro Area. She also enjoys writing short stories and flash fiction several of which have been published and continue to be enjoyed by readers.

She lives in Bethesda, Maryland and NY with her husband. She has four grown children and four grandchildren who enjoy reading her special stories written just for them. Besides reading and writing, she also enjoys travel, paper collage, painting and knitting.
