Dwight A. Holland

Dwight A. Holland, MALS, MS, MSE, MD, PhD is from the Cave Spring area in Roanoke, VA, and is a LtCol in the USAF Reserve supporting active duty. He is the co-founder/principal of Human Factors Associates, Inc, which performs human systems integration and systems management to reduce injuries in various workplaces from the factory floor to space. And, he seeks to increase organizational efficiency, safety and improve decision-making in a wide variety of systems. Dr Holland is also currently an IMA to the Chief of the 711th Human Performance Wing, Warfighter Readiness Research Division at Wright Patterson AFB, and is working on projects to improve human performance for the USAF through better integration of the people with state-of-the-art science and engineering.

Dr Holland was the Senior Reserve Officer in the USAF Test Pilot School in his last assignment there, and remains on the affiliated faculty. He was the first known reserve officer to serve in the USAF Tet Pilot School. Dwight is a pilot, research pilot, and test engineer with over 2,000 hr of flying in over 40 aircraft. Dwight has been on a remote Antarctica expedition living in an unheated tent for 3 months and flying sorties to off-site Antarctic areas nearly every day on a Geophysical Research Expedition. He has chaired over 50 panels at international conferences, has over 100 academic presentations and publications to his credit. He is particularly interested in Human Performance in Extreme Environments.

Dwight is the Past President of the International Association of Military Flight Surgeon Pilots, Space Medicine Association, and the current President of the Aerospace Human Factors Association. He has taught alpine skiing professionally part-time at Vail and Snowshoe Resorts. The book he co-authored BREAKING THE MISHAP CHAIN was recommended by Smithsonian Air and Space Magazine as a "book to buy", and with very positive academic reviews, and it is in contention for a National Aviation Safety Book Award. Dr. Holland is a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical and Aerospace Human Factors Associations. He was the youngest member at the time when selected to the prestigious International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine in 2007.

Dr Holland has also written op-ed pieces, and been quoted in major newspapers all over the world at various times. He is a occasional avid doubles tennis player, and has been ranked as high as No 1 in his yearly age group rankings in USTA Virginia for Pro/Amateur players for Men's Doubles.

Dwight has served on the Supervisory Committee of a financial institution, as served as the Chair of the Committee for two years with the highest possible composite scores from the Federal Government for management attributes. He has also served on the Virginia Tech Alumni Association Board for 6 years, and on the Multicultural & Diversity Board for 4 years to date, with continued service at present.
