Ellen Wade Beals

Trained as a journalist, Ellen Wade Beals writes poetry and prose. Her work has appeared in literary magazines, in anthologies, and on the web here and in Ireland.

Her poem "Between the sheets" appears in the textbook Everything's a Text (Pearson 2010).

She is the editor and publisher of Solace in So Many Words (Weighed Words LLC, an imprint of Hourglass Books).

Her short fiction has received commendations. In 1999, her short story, "Picking," was awarded Willow Springs fiction prize. Her short story "So We Die" was short-listed for Cobalt's Fiction Prize (2014). And, "Art's Boy" was awarded third place in Rambunctious Review's Fiction Contest (2001).

Her poetry has also received notice. Her poem "I Google my name" received third place in the 2004 Frieda Stein Fensler Memorial Award sponsored by ChicagoPoetry.com. Her poem "Taxonomy: How to Know" received second place in the 2003 Jo-Anne Hirshfield Poetry Competition put on by Evanston Library. And, her poem "Household Gods" received second place in the anthology Family Gatherings (Outrider Press, 2003).

In 2002, she went to the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland to work on her novel. That book, The Good and Bad of It, is complete and looking for a good home.
