Hugh Morrison is a practising structural engineer with his own company, Hugh Morrison Associates, based in Manchester, UK. He graduated in Architectural Engineering from Leeds University in 1984, which also included a brief three-month exchange course at Penn State University in the USA.
After starting his career at British Aerospace as a stress engineer working on satellites and associated structures, Hugh secured a post at Arup Associates in London. Here, he was able to indulge in his interest in architecture and the integration of structural design. One of his notable early projects was the tensile roof structure at Goodwood Racecourse.
Hugh gained further experience at Arup by working on various projects, including the headquarters of Commerzbank in Frankfurt, then the highest project in Europe, and the HQ of Glaxo in Stevenage, where he learned the importance of detailed drawings and calculations.
Later, Hugh moved north to join Stephen Morley at Atelier One, working on projects such as the south stand of Chelsea Stadium. This period was both grueling and rewarding, involving varied and challenging designs.
Throughout his career, Hugh has worked with several prominent firms, including Buro Happold, Woolgar Hunter, and Anthony Hunt Associates, before co-founding Scott Hughes Design in Manchester. There, he became a Director and developed expertise in specialist stair design, glass, and structurally insulated panels (SIPs).
Eventually, Hugh established his own company, Hugh Morrison Associates, focusing on SIPs, timber frame, and special structures. His clients have remained loyal, appreciating his dedication and expertise in the field.
