David A. Grimes

Bronze medal awarded to Every Third Woman in America, 2015 national eLit competition, women's issues category

Former Chief of the Abortion Surveillance Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. David Grimes is one of the few U.S. physicians Board-certified in both obstetrics/gynecology and preventive medicine. He has had a dual career in clinical medicine and public health for four decades. Having been a faculty member at four medical schools, Dr. Grimes has published 390 peer-reviewed articles, 50 textbook chapters, and 11 books. Working with the CDC and the World Health Organization, he has conducted pioneering research documenting the safety of both medical and surgical abortion. In recognition of his contributions to women's health, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists; he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in the U.K. He was also elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science.

As Dr. Grimes notes in his new book "Every Third Woman in America: How Legal Abortion Transformed Our Nation," the question facing society today is not whether women will have abortions or not. The question is what women will be forced to pay for their abortions -- in terms of dollars, disease, degradation and, for some, death.
