Charles L. Chatmon

Charles L. Chatmon writes stories rooted in history, community, and the enduring struggle for freedom. His work spans novels, poetry, essays, journalism, and speculative fiction, unified by a deep empathy for the human condition and a commitment to truth. As Director of the AC Bilbrew Library’s Writers Workshop, he continues a long tradition of nurturing emerging voices in Los Angeles’ literary community. A longtime freelance writer for the California Crusader Newspaper and other publications, and the former Executive Director of the L.A. Black Book Expo, Chatmon has spent decades documenting the realities of urban life, celebrating Black creativity, and preserving cultural memory. Whether chronicling everyday experiences or imagining cosmic rebellions against empire, his writing carries the weight of lived experience and the clarity of a seasoned observer.
