Dr Arran Johnston is an historian and writer based in south-east Scotland. His work primarily covers Scottish military history of the 17th and 18th centuries with a particular focus on the Jacobite Rising of 1745, although Arran has wide-ranging interests covering over 2000 years of history. Arran is a proactive speaker and presenter, and is actively involved in the interpretation, promotion and protection of battlefield sites. He is the founding director of the Scottish Battlefields Trust.
Arran was born in Derbyshire and attended Derby Grammar School before moving to Scotland. He has an MA(Hons) in Ancient History and Latin from the University of Edinburgh, and a PhD from the University of the West of Scotland focusing on the Scotland's diaspora.
