Doug Wedge is a writer who explores and presents stories, primarily those about baseball history. He believes in going beyond the box scores and the statistics and learning about players’ experiences – the action on the field and the preparation behind the scenes – and sharing these first-hand perspectives and insights. In his first book, co-written with Charlie O’Brien, THE CY YOUNG CATCHER, he presents the experiences of a fifteen-year Major League veteran who, at different points in his career, worked with thirteen award-winning pitchers. The contexts for working with the pitchers varied as O’Brien played on 1993 Mets, a last-place team dubbed “The Worst Team Money Could Buy,” and caught Doc Gooden and Bret Saberhagen, and two years later, O'Brien was behind the plate for the World Series-winning Atlanta Braves and their starters Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz. O’Brien learned the personalities of his batterymates and discovered which buttons to push, when to nudge and challenge, and when to build confidence. In Wedge’s second book, BASEBALL IN ALABAMA: TALES OF HARDBALL IN THE HEART OF DIXIE, he profiles ten former Major League players with Alabama roots as well as shares stories about high school, college, and professional baseball in Alabama. The profiles are based on in-depth interviews with each player and present over sixty years of baseball history as Alex Grammas begins the book describing growing up in Birmingham and playing baseball on rock-hard fields with little coaching but ultimately reaching the big leagues, and the book closes with Tim Hudson reflecting on retiring in 2015 as the active leader in career wins.
Wedge has interviewed multiple athletes, including eleven enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and one inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His website is www.dougwedge.com.
