Joe Massimo

The late, Dr. Joe Massimo, affectionately known as “Doc” throughout the gymnastics community, passed away in the spring of 2020. He is the best-selling co-author of Gymnastics Psychology: The Ultimate Guide for Coaches, Gymnasts and Parents. He began his career in gymnastics in 1950 as a competitor on the SUNY Cortland gymnastics team and has remained active in the sport as a judge, TV commentator, coach, and psychologist ever since.

“Doc” Massimo was appointed as a Sport Psychologist to the United States National Coaching Staff in 1969, USA Gymnastics National Athlete Wellness Network in 1997, and consulted with several USA Olympic Teams over the years. Before retiring as a Clinical Psychologist, he was an Asst. Clinical Professor of Education at Harvard University, Asst. Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Sport Psychology in the B.U. Graduate School of Education as well as the University of Massachusetts.

Dr. Joe “Doc” Massimo, has published articles for over 50 years in professional and mainstream periodicals such as International Gymnast Magazine, National Technical Notes, and most recently The Elite Gymnastics Journal, a publication of the U.S. Elite Coaches Association. He has also co-authored two other books with Dr. Sue Massimo entitled Psychology and Gymnastics Vol. I & II published in 1986 and 1994.
