David Walker is a native of Sulphur, La. where he was a star pitcher and quarterback for the hometown Golden Tors in the early seventies. Under the guidance of Louisiana Hall of Fame coach Shannon Suarez he led his team to the state playoffs and was voted all-state and outstanding offensive player. The pass-happy lefty signed early with LSU but reconsidered, hoping to land the job at Texas A&M as a freshman. He succeeded in his quest and started the final six games for the young Aggies, and was also named to the all-SWC team as the offensive freshman of the year at age 17. To this day Walker remains the youngest athlete to play collegiate athletics. The complete story of his tumultuous college career is well documented in his book, "I'll Tell You When You're Good," a phrase often used by Coach Suarez when confronting "cockiness" by his players. Upon graduation Walker spent over a decade coaching and teaching math before accepting a position with a large Cadillac dealership in Houston where he was soon appointed sales manager. At age 54, Walker typed his autobiography with a single finger after breaking his neck in a roll-over accident, a medical condition he wasn't aware of until near the book's completion. He discovered he'd suffered C4 and C5 dislocations and his doctors could not ascertain how he was still walking. The final chapter of his book is devoted to this tragic event in his life, his continued faith in God, and the threat of paralysis during surgery. David now lives in College Station and speaks frequently to groups and Aggie Clubs. In 2013 Walker was one of 13 inaugural inductees voted into the Sulphur High School Hall of Fame, so honored at the school's Centennial celebration. David is the only inductee who graduated within the previous 50 years.
