Stephan G. Humer

Dr. Stephan Humer is Professor and Director of the Internet Sociology Unit (“Forschungs- und Arbeitsbereich Internetsoziologie”) at Hochschule Fresenius (Department onlineplus). Since 2019 he is a Member of the Research Cluster of Excellence on Islamic Extremism (Joint Project ‘MOTRA’), coordinated by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). Several other involvements since 2005, e.g. at the Berlin University of the Arts, Free University of Berlin, University of Potsdam, Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, MIT and Oxford University, complete his commitment to serve as a full-time Researcher and Innovator in the field of Sociology of the Internet and digital analyses, especially Digital Security.

From March 2013 to September 2021 he was Chairman of the German ‘Verein’ (Association) “Netzwerk Terrorismusforschung” (Terrorism Research Network). His research focuses on Terrorism and Extremism in the digital sphere and Social Media Intelligence. He is working with Police and Security Agencies, e.g. the German Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt), Hamburg Police, and the Police of Bavaria. Since 2020 he is NTFs Coordinator for Advanced Research Projects.

Stephan is a sought-after Interviewee and visiting author for leading international and German online magazines, newspapers, periodicals, radio and TV stations as well as an in-demand speaker and consultant. Respected media like German TV stations ARD, ZDF, 3sat, RTL and Sat.1 as well as ZEIT Wissen, Tagesspiegel, RTL Radio and Austrian ORF, Kurier and Standard reported on his findings. International media like Wall Street Journal, Slate, SRF, Dagbladet, and mtv also interviewed him.
