國立台灣師範大學音樂系畢業,曾隨劉天林、陳明律、戴序倫等教授學習。隨後取得美國博爾大學聲樂碩士學位,再獲得印第安那大學助教獎學金赴該校研究,接著又在奧地利政府獎學金資助下,進入國立維也納音樂院進修,並曾在法國浦朗克音樂學院國際法國藝術歌曲中心研習。1990-1991年,他應美國愛荷華州立大學之聘,在該校音樂系講學一年。
陳榮貴的演唱足跡遍及歐洲、美國、加拿大及亞洲各大城市,曾與世紀女高音法蘭妮(Mirella Freni)及世界著名指揮John Giordano同台演出。他先後飾演三十餘部中外歌劇裏的主要男中音角色,並參與神劇和藝術歌曲的室內樂演唱。陳榮貴亦曾發表威爾第歌劇《弄臣》的研究、男中音歌劇詠嘆調和演唱詮釋,及榮獲國科會著作研究獎的威爾第歌劇《遊唱詩人》的研究等專書。目前是國立臺灣師範大學音樂系暨表演藝術研究所合聘教授。
Rong-Kwei Chen graduated from the National Taiwan Normal University. He continued his studies in the United States of America and obtained a Master of Music degree from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he studied voice and opera performance with Professor George Fourie. In 1978 he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. His teachers there were Walter Cassel and John Wustman.
Rong-Kwei Chen has performed in recitals and operas in major Asian cities, such as Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, Osaka, Okinawa, Bangkok, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur, and is the leading baritone of the Taipei Opera Theater and Professor of Voice at the National Taiwan Normal University.
In 1986, Chen received a scholarship from the Austrian Government for advanced study in Vienna, at the Hochschule fuer Musik und darstellende Kunst. In 1990, he was a visiting Associate Professor of voice at Iowa State University and toured throughout the United States, performing in Chicago, Des Moines, Fort Wayne, Los Angeles and Seattle.
His repertoire includes major operatic roles such as Alfio, Tonio, Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro) Escamillo, Valentine, Belcore, Malatesta, Papageno and Scarpia. He is well-known for his interpretation of the Verdi baritone roles, including Rigoletto, Germont, Conte di Luna and Amonasro. His oratorio repertoire includes the Elijah and the Brahms Requiem.
