Jayne Marlowe writes smart, character-driven, formula-free fiction centered on complicated, capable Black women who own their choices. Based in Texas, she brings dark, cynical wit and Southern Gothic sensibility to her work. She likes to put ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances and let the consequences play out. She writes for grown-ups, so expect strong language and mature themes.
Born and raised in the South, Jayne began writing as a girl who wanted to read stories with a Black heroine in the lead instead of the comic sidekick. She still holds to this goal creating characters who have flaws and virtues, so they are human, not substitute role models. She also has more than 20 years' experience as a professional fiction editor.
Jayne is a child of the 1970s and remembers life before the internet. She is left-handed and very ticklish, and she loves music, animals, comic books, and cars made of real steel.
Come for the story, not the formula.
