BC Dee

BC Dee has been an author of children’s stories since age five, and a father ever since the birth of his daughter. Isabel is the inspiration for his stories that are replete with playful insights into children and the world around them.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is Isabel's favorite story by her daddy. She loves to read, and often dances with the moon— even after bedtime.

A life-long educator, BC Dee has taught in one middle school, two high schools, one community college, and three universities. This fact, however, should not be held against him—he is still a fun dinner party guest.

From the Author:

I like all things spherical and most things circular, particularly when they are bright colors. I like toys. I like to build them and I like to play with them. Sometimes I let my three-year-old daughter play with them too. My wife has told me that I shouldn’t let her play with my woodworking toys tools. I come from a long line of woodworkers...scratch that... wood enthusiasts (none of my clan has ever worked wood for money).

In the 90’s I lived and worked in Japan. In the 00’s I lived and worked in Brazil, with a short stopover in Kazakhstan. In Kazakhstan I became fascinated by yurts. Returning to the US, I am so happy to find that many state and federal parks are using yurt technology to house casual campers. Speaking of parks, did you know that Rio de Janeiro has the largest urban rainforest in the world? I don’t suppose that there are many cities in the running for that title, but there you have it.

For a long time, I thought I was a cat person. I had a cat, the same cat, for 22 years. Sometimes I say that “she raised me from a pup.” In some ways, she was like an aloof Nanny from Peter Pan. For the last ten years, I’ve had a dog. But I don’t describe myself as a dog person. I have realized that it wasn't cats in general that I liked. It isn’t dogs in general that I like. I loved MY cat, and I love MY dog. I also like to watch birds, although I haven’t had a close relationship with a bird since my brother’s dog ran off with my parakeet, Phoebe. In Kazakhstan, I had a superficial relationship with a pair of zebra finches. None of us fully committed to the relationship, knowing that I would be leaving them behind.

My music taste is eclectic, although not as eclectic as the piped in playlist in Japanese malls and stores. I spent a significant amount of time digging on jam bands. I also like peanut butter. I got paid in cash for filling in on bass guitar in a honky tonk outside of Gainesville, FL. I had a regular gig, paid in beer, at a gaijin dive bar in Sapporo, Japan. And, although I learned to speak Japanese, it turns out that I’m a serial monolinguist, so Portuguese overwrote it in my brain. That’s okay, Portuguese is more useful to me because that’s what my wife and daughter speak.

When I am not living small and simplifying my life, I tend towards big gestures and weaving a tangle of complications together. In the end, it is the problems in life that give us something to do with our time. Also, as I heard when I was sailing around Florida: smooth seas don’t make skillful sailors.
