D.C. Innes

D.C. Innes (Ph.D. Boston College, M.Div. RPTS, B.A. University of Toronto) has taught politics at The King’s College in New York City since 2005 where he is also Chairman of the Program in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. He teaches courses in political theory, Christian political thought, and political economy. His interest in practical politics is apparent just from peeking into his office. His walls are covered with campaign material from the past half-century. Prof. Innes teaches the Foundations of Politics course in the Core as well as advanced courses in modern and Christian political thought and political economy.

The focus of his research has been the political philosophy of Francis Bacon, in particular the political significance of modern science, and the role of civil religion in Bacon’s political project. "Bacon's New Atlantis: The Christian Hope and the Modern Hope” first appeared in Interpretation: A Journal of Political Philosophy, and subsequently in Piety and Humanity: Essays on Religion and Early Modern Political Philosophy, edited by Douglas Kries (Rowman & Littlefield, 1997). In 2010, he contributed "Civil Religion as Political Technology in Bacon’s New Atlantis" to an anthology of essays, Civil Religion in Political Thought, edited by John von Heyking and Ronald Weed (Catholic University of America Press). He has written on current politics in The Washington Times, American Thinker, The Daily Caller, and Worldmag.com

Innes brings together faith, philosophy, and practical political life in Left, Right, and Christ: Evangelical Faith in Politics, co-authored with Lisa Sharon Harper (Elevate, 2011, 2016). The authors present their side-by-side Evangelical views of government and economics—conservative and liberal—then apply what they argue are their biblical principles to five controversial topics of current public debate.

Before coming to The King’s College, Innes served seven years in the pastoral ministry in Iowa, taught at Assumption College, Stonehill College, and Geneva College, and is presently also a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
