I am the pastor of First English Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. I graduated from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 1993, and I've served two other parishes: First Lutheran Church in Burnet (1994-1999), and Christ Lutheran Church of Alamo Heights, in San Antonio (1999-2008). My undergraduate degree is in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana.
I am married to Kathryn Coffey, who is an architect. We have two sons.
My major areas of interest in ministry are the ongoing development of liturgy and ritual, Old Testament theology, contemporary relevance of a theology of the cross, masculine spirituality and male initiation rites, cooking and building community through food, and exploring spiritual and theological themes in film.
In my free time (when is that??), I enjoy playing piano, home remodeling, brewing beer, computers and technology, and composing liturgical music and hymns. I watch Stephen Colbert as much as possible. If you know of a great Irish whiskey to try, let me know.
