About the Author

I was born in Liverpool in 1956 and moved to Cornwall with my family in 1959 following my mother's mental breakdown. I spent my childhood growing up in and around St Austell during the 1960s and 1970s, with a life full of experiences that would later inspire my memoir, Emmet Boy: A Heartfelt Memoir of Growing Up in Cornwall.

As a schoolboy, I was far more familiar with being on the receiving end of corporal punishment than I was with academic success, leaving school with few qualifications.

Determined to change my fortunes, I attended evening classes for seven years whilst working and eventually gained the qualifications that would lead me into a successful career in education, I attended evening classes for seven years whilst working, and I eventually gained the qualifications that would lead me into a successful career in education.

In 1997 I embarked upon my journey from "poacher to gamekeeper" when I trained to become a teacher. I later worked as a mathematics lecturer, university mentor and educational consultant, helping students, teachers and schools to improve outcomes and achieve their potential.

I authored the GCSE MathsBlasters revision series, the teaching and mentoring book Are We There Yet?, and numerous articles on sport and statistical analysis. My writing combines humour, honesty and a deep interest in the experiences that shape people's lives.

Now retired, I live in Warwickshire with my wife, Tricia. Together we have four children and five grandchildren, and we own a caravan in Cornwall, just outside Padstow and when I am not writing or spending time in Cornwall, I enjoy sport, history, gaming and reflecting on the people, places and events that have influenced my life.
