Dan Brady

Born in New York City, New York in 1952. I was 8 when my father died and my mother moved the family to California. She managed to raise seven of us well despite trying circumstances. In high school I became interested in writing and later graduated from San Francisco State University in 1975 with a degree in Sociology with a writing emphasis. It was while I was in San Francisco that I began to give readings, publish in small press magazines, manage a poetry venue and publish Birthstone Magazine.

I began my teaching career in 1987 and married in 1989 so for several years writing was set aside. However, it was through haiku and the Haiku Poets of Northern California that I began my return to writing. During much of the 90’s, my readings consisted mainly of haiku, but since 2000, my interest in blank verse reasserted itself and I began to write lyric verse as well. I have been active in the San Francisco’s poetry scene since performing readings, publishing, hosting and attending events as well as maintaining a calendar of San Francisco’s open mic scene.

I have also returned to writing science fiction, my genre of choice as a young reader, and my stories include explorations of the human condition and universal values. More recently I’ve begun to write children’s books. I have been an elementary school teacher for 25 years and have always told stories, now I am writing some of them.
