Philip Mann has spent his life as a graphic designer. A Harrow County Grammar School boy, he was the last person to obtain a place at Hornsey College of Art on the merit of his portfolio, having insufficient qualifications for automatic acceptance. While still studying he started freelancing and on leaving Hornsey had enough clients to begin his own business. He later became Art Director first of Secker & Warburg Publishers, then William Heinemann, and finally Macmillan Publishers, throughout maintaining a variety of external clients from Greek Sun Holidays to Express Newspapers, British Home Stores to V&A Publications. On his second trip to Greece in 1986 he experienced a prescient sensation that would not leave and was the start of Second Wind.
