I was born in Madison, WI in 1966, but spent most of my childhood in Connecticut. I went to college at Princeton University, and in 1988 moved out to Santa Barbara, CA for graduate school, where I met and married my wife. I have stayed in California ever since, and now have three amazing daughters.
I am currently a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UC Irvine. I am also the current Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning and the Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Education. My research in is the behavior of foams, dust in the lung, and ice chunks in fjords. I also enjoy engaging the public on science through pop culture. This includes being in a YouTube Series called Fascinating Fights, in which a panel of experts debates the outcome of a battle between a wide range of pop culture figures.
The relation between science and faith has also been a passion of mine, and my book, Divine Science: Finding Reason at the Heart of Faith, is a sharing of my reflections and experiences with this important issue.
