Elvin Hooper

Elvin Hooper has always lived on Hatteras Island. He grew up in the village of Salvo where commercial hunting and fishing with his father, brother, cousins, and friends molded his childhood years. His family lived in Salvo until 1998. Their home was situated on the sound front and quite vulnerable to sound-side flooding. After coping with storm water damage to the dwellings several times, he moved his family to higher ground in Buxton woods. Now their home is located in the Hatteras Pines area, twenty feet above sea level. Flooding is no longer an issue. During hurricanes and storms, the woods provide adequate protection from the heavy winds.

Hooper’s hobbies include hunting, sport fishing, gathering shellfish, and spending time out on the sound or in the inlets is his small boat. Surfing is still an option when the waves are small. You will find him on the south side of the point where the water is shallow. He has enjoyed all types of sports, but mostly these days as a spectator. He loves to play music with his friends, and he is still employed at the local high school as a part-time shop teacher. He is a full-time employee with the Department of Transportation Ferry System located at Hatteras Inlet. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Cape Hatteras Electric Membership Cooperative for thirty years. He loves to work a fast-paced schedule, and enjoys the feeling of belonging to all these workplace families. He enjoys writing, and a chance to relive the experiences of his youthful glory days.
