Gregory Powell, CFP, CHS, EPC, CD, BA (Psych)
Greg Powell was born and raised in Vancouver, BC and is a graduate of Simon Fraser University with a Double Major (Psychology and Criminology). A thirteen year Canadian military career as a Combat Engineer, included duties such as providing leadership during aid-to-civil-power missions and participating in international military operations. Greg is a multiple decorated army veteran whose medals include the prestigious Governor General of Canada Commendation for his involvement the Battle of Medak in the Bosnian War 1992-1993. Greg retired a Sergeant commanding 32 soldiers in 2001.
In early 2004 he began as a financial advisor in the Surrey, British Columbia branch with Sun Life Financial, the same branch his father David Powell founded in 1976. Later in 2004 he was selected for the Manager Program and in 2007 was approached for a Regional Manager position. Over 18 months, Greg worked with over 400 advisors and 40 managers in BC. In June of 2008, Greg was offered the position of Branch Manager of the Surrey, BC office.
Over the last 12 years Greg and his team often achieved regional and national excellence and won President’s Circle in 2014 being recognized as a top branch for production, agency growth and quality. He repeatedly wins GAMA International recognition such as the “National Management Award”, Agency Builder Award” and the “Agency Achievement Award”. In the last 5 years he has doubled revenue, sales production, agent retention and agency size.
From 2009 to 2013 Greg was President of GAMA International Canada. During that he led significant change from growing membership by 70% and increasing LAMP membership tenfold. Greg is a regular contributor to FORUM, Advisors Edge and Money magazines.
Greg’s first book, “The Financial Managers Survivial Kit: From Survival to Success as a Sales Manager in the Financial Services Industry” was published in 2016 and after successful presentations in Vancouver, Ottawa and Chicago he will be speaking at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas at LAMP Conference this March.
Greg enjoys SCUBA diving and furniture building. Having traveled by foot across the Arctic Circle in 1989, he hopes to travel to Antarctica one day to complete his pole to pole experience.
In 2010, Greg and his wife Julie Cook, another long-time financial industry leader, travelled to Kazakhstan to adopt their daughter Lucy.
