Theo Maehr

Theo Maehr is a teacher and artist who has lived on the Monterey Peninsula on the Central California Coast for more than twenty years. In addition to being a author, he is a lyre maker, a ship captain, photographer, house builder, farmer and diver.

His prior endeavors have included Waldorf teaching, professional storytelling, outdoor education, agriculture, construction, raft guiding, and lots and lots of time wandering around in nature.

Theo currently lives in the Santa Lucia mountains of Big Sur, where he has built himself a delightfully sturdy and simple "off-the-grid" home with an ample garden and orchard.

UPDATE AUGUST 2016:

The area of Big Sur where Theo lives was devastated by the Soberanes Fire, which began on July 22, 2016 and destroyed nearly 60 homes in the Palo Colorado area. Theo is well and safe. The weary photo was taken after he and others had worked for days to prevent fire from taking his own property.

Because of the exemplary work Theo has done over the years to clear and maintain a defensible space, his home was spared! It did not burn. Theo has long believed that with proper land maintenance, many homes can be protected from wildfire.
