Hi, I’m Joan Brown, and my passion is writing fiction. My stories examine social, political and economic forces in our lives.
Through the decades, I’ve written dozens of short stories, non-fiction articles, summaries of civil legal matters, and worked as a journalist covering politics, education, human-interest features and crime. Currently I write novels.
When, as a teenager, I announced I wanted to be an author, my mother said, “You’ve got nothing to write about. You don’t know anything. Wait until you’re fifty or sixty.”
Since then, I’ve worked in sales, law and journalism, traveled the world, nearly drowned twice, plummeted almost to death once, run wild through forests on horses, and spent unimaginable hours on the nine bus commuting up and down Portland, Oregon’s Powell Boulevard.
Most importantly, I’ve experienced the American evolution of democracy and capitalism.
Through it all I’ve consistently asked, why do we do the things we do? Why does each of us do our things different than every other person?
My stories center on ways we embrace or push against the forces in our lives.
Join my journey. Read my fiction.
