Susan Black

Susan lives in the vibrant and historic seaside town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. She began her creative career as a graphic designer after graduating from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design with both a BFA and a BDesign and along her creative journey she’s managed to keep a foot firmly planted in both disciplines. What has emerged is a whimsical & bold mixed media style which combines elements of collage, bits of vintage and patterned paper, hand drawn typography, inspirational or motivational words, paint, ink ... all stirred together with lots of passion & curiosity.

When creating new artwork or documenting her world with photographs, Susan tries to capture the simple wonders, beauty and joyful moments which she finds all around her in her everyday life. “ I hope when someone sees my work that it makes them smile, that they might be encouraged to slow down and appreciate the simple goodness in their own life: a kind word spoken, an inspirational phrase, a colourful blossom, a butterfly flitting by or time spent with their own much loved pets”. She considers her artwork her own visual gratitude journal - she counts her many blessings in and around her home, with her pets (a dog & 3 cats), in her garden and strolling beside the sea each day.

Susan’s inspiration is always found in nature. She has many passions & curiosities including a love of all animals, birds, insects, flowers, gardening, maps, reading, beachcombing, cooking & of course making things.
